Record Labels - Major/Independent

Record labels are essentially brands and trademarks that are associated with marketing songs, albums and music videos. Most of the time a record label is also a publishing company, which means that they manage brands, coordinate the production, marketing, promotion, distribution, manufacturing and the administration of copyright laws. In the music industry the majority of artists rely on record labels to expand their demographic, sell their albums, manage marketing and promote them by getting them time on TV and radio shows.

A major music label is a record label that is part of a large international media group, compared to independent record labels which are mostly small localised record labels.
